Are you looking for Mothering Sunday gifts and inspiration?

In the UK, Mother’s Day falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is three weeks before Easter. So, this year, it is Sunday 27th March.  And, after two years of having to stay apart, we can celebrate this special day together!  Mothering Sunday is the time to show our appreciation for mum - and/or the special mother figures in our life.

In the UK, Mothering Sunday is a religious celebration - traditionally dedicated to honouring the Virgin Mary. Mothering Sunday started in the Middle Ages because the children often worked away from home. They returned home on Mothering Sunday to visit their ‘mother church’ and spend precious time with their mothers. Children often picked wildflowers on their journey home to take to church or give to their mother as a small gift.

Despite the different origins, Mother’s Day in the UK became more commercialised and by the 1950s it had become more of a secular celebration, in line with the US. Today, the traditional phrase ‘Mothering Sunday’ is often replaced with the US version ‘Mother’s Day’.

Mothering Sunday is a celebration of love through little acts of kindness. So, Mother’s Day ideas for special together-time may include:

1. Surprise breakfast in bed
2. Making a scrapbook of your favourite memories together
3. Family Quiz or Craft night
4. Watching her favourite movie together
5. Organise afternoon tea
